Why Be Moral?
Perhaps it’s a matter of choice: to choose to be good, or to live to a standard of moral ethics. Perhaps some are inherently moral, like Abel, and some are inherently immoral, like Cain. Perhaps it is a matter of seeing the result of immorality for us to truly desire to live moral lives. An addict, an alcoholic, cowards, the sexually immoral sometimes need to see the outcome of their decisions to desire to want to live a moral life. Perhaps it is the essence of goodness; perhaps it is a revelation or awakening; perhaps it is Jesus coming into our lives. “Why” is a desire to stop living immorally, then make a choice…then take action.
Exploring Moral Reasoning
Deontological Ethics (with a mix of Ethical Egoism) resonates with me most. I am responsible first and foremost for my decisions and actions. My words and actions define my character, and character is defined by integrity; my integrity is formed from my prayer life and introspective thoughts. The Word of God becomes the gauge of my morality, and the Holy Spirit guides my actions based on the Word. “Thy Rod and thy staff, they comfort me.”
Once upon a time, I had nothing to base my morality on; I just did whatever I wanted.
