Luke 17:21 “The Kingdom of God is within you and among you”

The Kingdom of God within us will always cry out to reason for humanity’s sake.

In 1940, a year after Nazi Germany invaded Poland, and effectively began WW2, Charlie Chaplain starred in the film The Great Dictator. Though an American, Chaplain had heard about all the sufferings of his fellow Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime. As much as the German propaganda tried to spin what happened on the “Kristallnacht” in 1938, refugees and escapees had already carried the truth around the world. His obvious concern generates this shining attempt to reason with the man before it is too late.

His delivery is genuinely heartfelt. His hope breaks through despair, he pleads with us to not be “Machine men” To think for ourselves, to fight for a World of reason, for us to live with the purpose of Democracy and to Congress. Chaplain knows that man can reason out our problems and differences without murdering our fellow man. He almost begs the men to not be the instrument of other men’s design of Destruction. “The misery now upon us is but the passing of Greed” Reminding them they are MEN! Now weapons, not cattle, not monsters. Reason begs morality for righteousness.

This speech was so passionate, and extremely well written. It intends to pierce the thoughts and beliefs of man. He begins by denouncing power and governing anyone in any way. This reasons that governance should never be tyrannical, he ends with reminding us that power will always be restored back into the hands of the people, where it should be. In the first half of this speech, he is calm, explaining there is a better way than greed. He knows “the Love of money is the root of all evil” 1 Tim 6:10. He also takes the time to illustrate how the world is becoming a smaller place, through the invention of the radio, and planes. The advancement of technology should be utilized to better mankind, not for perfect widespread torture and slaughter. 

Halfway through the speech his calm demeanor breaks, and his determination will be heard and seen. The severity of the subject is no longer for the profits of a Hollywood film. He would not be silent and quiet as the world spiraled into all-out chaos and horror. Spitting fire with radiant love, his words would be heard…and felt! Words do impact, words do change the world
