Let me preface this post by saying Amena Brown’s book Breaking Old Rhythms really spoke to me, since I grew up with a father who was a D.J.! Amena Brown’s use of music made my comprehension of her message very personal. 🙂

The first key point Mrs. Brown makes that stands out is Finding your Rhythm. She explains God being like a music director, comparing what the music teacher was attempting to do with what God is trying to do in our lives! God sings a very specific note, and he is approaching each of us singing that note to get us In Sync with His note! It is His note, and he knows exactly how we wants us to all sing it!

The second key point Mrs. Brown mentions is The Blessing of irritation. This point made me think of my recent studies on suffering, and what the Bible says about it. Amena says God irritates us because “He knows it the best way to get our attention”  She reminds us of Joseph, who having a fantastic dream thought he was going to be someone great and rule over his brothers. This eventually came to be somewhat true, but only after quite a lot of irritation. His brothers attempt to murder him, selling him into slavery, serving a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. God will use, or allow irritation in our lives to get us out of old ryhthms.

The third key point I want to bring up is the Rhythm of fighting! Being a martial artist (I am quite rusty at the moment) this chapter really caught my attention! “Most of us like our rhythm familiar” Yes, yes we do! She quotes Bruce Lee as he explains that two equally matched fighters will find a rhythm, and it’s the one who can break the rhythm that will land a blow! Trust me, this is true! She further explains that the apostle Paul taught us that there is a “Good Fight” to fight! This can be seen in his instructions in 1 Timothy 6:11-12 “(11) But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, perseverance, and gentleness. (12) Fight the good fight of faith! Take hold of the eternal life—you were called to it, and you made the good confession for it in the presence of many witnesses”
